Five Steps towards Resilience of Airports
This document, titled "Global Study on Disaster Resilience of Airports: Five Steps towards Resilience of Airports," is a publication by the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), highlighting airports as critical assets for economic transport and disaster response. It emphasizes the projected USD 2.4 trillion in global airport investments by 2040, underscoring the need for resilience against climate risks like rising sea levels and extreme weather to prevent disruptions and economic losses.
Building on CDRI's 2023 Phase 1 study of 111 airports across 54 countries, which assessed hazard perceptions, risk practices, and adaptive capacities, the report proposes five key steps: conducting Periodic Vulnerability Assessments (PVAs) to identify risks; upscaling to comprehensive risk and resilience evaluations; establishing risk appetites; collaborating with stakeholders; and creating integrated disaster resilience plans. It details benefits such as minimized damages, efficient resource allocation, and swift recovery, while addressing challenges like data gaps and stakeholder coordination.
A case study on the Netherlands' security regions illustrates cohesive institutional frameworks for multi-sector disaster management. The document outlines CDRI's support through technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and capacity building to foster proactive, collaborative resilience strategies for airport operators, governments, and stakeholders worldwide.
