Policy on the Seismic Retrofitting of Housing and Other Buildings

The Japanese government has established a subsidy programme for seismic assessments of houses and for retrofitting homes that do not meet current seismic standards. This system is designed so that anyone who owns an eligible home regardless of their income level or social status can apply for assistance. In 2024, approximately 133,000 detached houses and about 180,000 apartment units have undergone seismic retrofitting using the national subsidy program. The seismic resistance rate of homes in Japan has increased from 75 percent in 2003 to 90 percent in 2023. Click to Read |
