In 2015, Nepal was struck by a massive earthquake of 7.8 magnitude with its epicentre in Gorkha district. Nearly 500,000 houses were destroyed, and more than 250,000 houses were partially damaged. Government of Nepal adopted owner-driven housing reconstruction (ODHR) approach for reconstruction and retrofitting of private houses destroyed or damaged by the earthquake. Sociotechnical assistance was provided to the affected houseowners during the reconstruction process. Nepal's reconstruction approach is also acknowledged as being a successful model of inclusive recovery with a built-in mechanism to address the needs of most vulnerable people, in line with the principle of 'leave no one behind', a core principle of the SDGs.  Click to Read
